Introduced in 1983, the JX-Programmable-Preset-Polyphonic analog synth from Roland was a big hit. Released alongside the Jupiter-6, both synths had a second oscillator which set them apart from the Juno. The JX-3P featured a button-only front panel and the classic chorus, whereas the Jupiter retained the knob and faders but had no built in effects.

Pathways is a sample-based Max for Live instrument that allows users to draw paths (made of small points) for sample playback over a spectrogram interface. The playback path (in blue) is based on which points were drawn first to last, allowing for all kinds of linear and nonlinear playback possibilities. It offers two playback modes that support a variable rate of playback (and freezing) without altering the pitch. This opens up options for approaching time-stretching and filtering.

Mouth Play is a maxforlive instrument that offers unconventional shaping of a vocal tract together with a simulated glottis (brass model) or FM oscillator as a source. This offers a large variety of sonic possibilities: from voice-like sounds (animal, human, monster), breathy sounds, glitchy, harsh, rich/pretty, droney or rhythmic synth sounds. The tract filter has a variety of modulation sources allowing for various qualities and movements.

Iridescence is a MaxForLive delay effect with arpeggiated note trails via a polyphonic real-time pitch shifting and delay system. You can select how many notes are in an arpeggiated “chord” created off of the audio input. Additionally, you can create up to 16 different chords that can transition via a Markov Chain (a probabilistic transition from chord to chord). This device can create beautiful harmonies off of a single note! There are various settings that allow the device to transform from one purpose to another. It is a powerhouse for real-time harmony on a continuous audio source! NOTE: This is an audio effect and though similar in some ways it is NOT by any means MIDI note arpeggiator!

In this tutorial, I explored a unique approach to creating distortion effects in Bitwig by utilizing wave tables instead of traditional transfer curves. Here's a summary of the key points:

Grain Forest is a maxforlive granular synth and effect. The granular playback and FX are driven by a simulation of a forest that evolves through DNA mixing and mutations over generations.

Divisions is a MaxForLive MIDI Effect. Use various drawing tools to draw walls that balls can bounce off of. You can create up to 32 emitters to launch balls with different settings. When a ball bounces off of a wall, a MIDI note is output based on the settings of its emitter. Use Divisions to create various different MIDI effects in a less conventional way! Whether a sequencer, arppeggiator, melody/counter point/chord generator, note delay, and whatever else you come up with!

This is the Bitwig project for the track I created in the last video.

data.mod is a modulator device that can be mapped to parameters in Ableton Live in order to modulate them. It centers around a grid of math operators. Each modulated parameter (up to 8) has its own modulation source/value and each frame that value changes based on its selected math operator. By changing the operators in a chain of events and the source of their right-hand operand, you can create complex to harmonic oscillations that can be evolving over time or repeating rhythms. Great for glitchy/chaotic, harmonic and rhythmic modulations, it can be quite diverse!
